The Gamification of Employees

It's not really a new topic.  Gamification has been a buzz word for a few years now and, slowly but surely, it seems to be infiltrating its way into lots of things we do.

Why is this such an attraction?

Well, it can help us do things we'd otherwise not like to do.  Whether it's a game involving a smart toothbrush that counts the number of times you brush your teeth to awarding badges or medals for employee achievements, gamification is on the increase.

But, how does this fit in with a company or local culture?

For example, a big pat on the back from your boss is always a nice feeling but does it feel the same as a receiving a badge or medal?  To some, I'm sure it does or perhaps even feels better than a pat.  Maybe you're a collector - you want to collect the set of badges and you'll do anything to complete the set.  My competitive tendencies are now laid bare - I love a challenge but does everyone?

Interesting times ahead, methinks.
