Hi Mom! Super-advanced Google finds way for families to stay in touch.

So let me just state for the record, in case this seems like sour grapes, that I think Google's ongoing updates to Google+ are generally fantastic.

However.

In their quest to find out more about you than you even know yourself, this is how Google ask for more contact information:

'How can your friends and family get in touch with you?'

Well Google, I'm glad you asked. Because that question had me stumped.

You know, my wife and I have shared a bed for the past four years, but we can only communicate through a system of beacons set on hilltops. Sure, we tried IM, but it felt a bit impersonal.

Also, I haven't heard from my folks in over a decade. They only live up the road, and I've been meaning to send them a letter with my phone number, but I just never got round to it.

And then there's my son. He's three years old, and has perfected the art of putting his face 1cm from mine and SHOUTING, but I still feel he's looking for other ways to get in touch.

So what a relief it is that I can finally tell them all that they can find out how to contact me by looking up my profile on Google+ and scrolling down to my contact information.

Hey, family members - if you're really special I might even add you to my Circles.

Dear Google, my two cents: In 99 out of 100 cases, if a family member doesn't already know how to get in touch, there's a damn good reason for it. Let it be. :)
